At CCE, we continue to drive corporate responsibility and sustainability (CRS) as a fundamental strategic imperative to improve our overall business performance. In 2009, we reinforced our commitment by implementing demanding, measurable goals in each of our five CRS focus areas. We are striving to achieve these goals by the year 2020 – an effort we are calling Commitment 2020.

We have already begun to make progress against these goals. In 2008 we reduced our carbon footprint by 600,000 metric tons – a reduction of approximately one percent from our 2007 baseline. As one of the Coca-Cola system’s most efficient users of water we continue to work to reduce the average amount of water used to make one liter of product and already have plants reaching ratios of 1.4 and below.

In addition, we now have 336 hybrid-electric trucks in North America, and are testing similar technology in Europe. In 2010 we will pilot fully electric trucks in New York City. Our facilities recycle an average of 89 percent of their waste in North America and over 98 percent in Europe. We also have demonstrated our commitment to health and a balanced/active lifestyle, voluntarily reducing calories in U.S. schools by 75 percent through responsible sales and marketing programs.

Furthermore, this progress is delivering real business benefits. We are decreasing operating costs and improving effectiveness and efficiency by using less energy, recycling packages and other materials, sending less waste to landfills, and reducing water use. We are also enhancing customer relationships through partnerships on environmental initiatives and community-based programs. Finally, we are engaging our employees by creating a company for which they are proud to work.

Our work has also been recognized externally. In 2009, CCE was ranked number one in the food and beverage sector and number 36 overall in the Fortune 500 in Newsweek’s first ever Green Rankings. We continue to strive not only to be the CRS leader in the global Coca-Cola system, but also across the entire beverage industry.
